I think we are starting to uncover the root cause of many of these shootings. The real experiment would be this: FBI identifies worrisome males (usually on sites like this) and then assigns several maxim models to stumble into their life "naturally" and fall in love with him. The model then monitors for signs of remission or worsening of mental illness. Incidence of mass shootings is recorded and trended vs previous years.
