The human race is inherently a gynocentric species. Women are biologically hardwired to look after one another. Men are biologically hardwired to want to protect women. Men are also biologically hardwired to see other men as potential competitors.
Women have always been protected. Just look at the titanic survival rates by gender...women were more likely to be saved than not only men, but also children.
Men on the other hand have always been treated as disposable unless they were at the top of the socioeconomic ladder.
