You know, I wouldn't have written this last year, but I now think we're very close to something like this.

OpenAI's GPT-3 came out recently and it's freakingly impressive. It is probably not much more work to turn it into a good conversational chatbot.

NVIDIA's styleGAN can generate photorealistic images of humans. Generating videos and full bodies is just a matter of increasing processing power.

I don't think we'll have freestanding volumetric images any time soon, but stereographic headsets can provide decent immersion into VR or AR.

I would say between ten and twenty years from now.

I would personally not be satisfied with a disembodied character though. I'd rather have a physical gynoïd, but I don't think that will be possible before say 40 years.
