I have pursued asceticism between ages 23 and 26, but gave up. This shit definitely isn't for anyone. Many monks have buttsex with each other, btw.
Some philosophers claim that it is much better to have the sweet illusion of afterlife - even if it truly doesn't exist - for it lets you live a much more peaceful life with no existential doubts, meanwhile abandoning the belief in afterlife makes you vulnerable, and, if the afterlife truly does not exist, isn't it better not to worry about it - at all?
However this is only one of possible perspectives.
