Now, don't assume what I'm not going to say. I don't think religion is as simple as this. However, religion can be partly perceived as "unattractive man mentality" (chandala mentality, in Nietzsche's assessment) that came to coincide at some point with the interests of the ruling class and ultimately dominated normies in a very funny historical twist and evolutionary phenomenon.
Who usually became a priest? True believers? Lol, no. If you think this, you haven't read enough books. The clerical class used to be the first to debate about the existence of God and other controversial subjects, write heretical books, or conduct scientific experiments. Read about the Jesuits, for instance.
People who joined the ranks of priests used to be "intellectuals", i.e. introverted men who read a lot and who aren't too good at war or manual labor. Who tends to be introverted? Men who derive more pleasure from books and solitary activities than from social contact; on average, unattractive men. This is a truism. Gregarious and handsome extroverts who spend more time plunged in old medieval texts than flirting with women or impressing them with various feats are kinda rare.
