The mother is definitely in the wrong here. After two years of no contact, her son reached out to reconnect, and instead of embracing that opportunity, she placed an unnecessary and harsh condition on his return. This was a moment for empathy and understanding, not rigid enforcement of personal beliefs. By demanding that he mask and test immediately upon arrival, she created an environment of control, not support. Her son wasn’t just coming home; he was trying to rebuild a relationship, and she made that incredibly difficult by placing her COVID-related conditions above the emotional need for reconnection. Her decision to insist on testing and masking without any consideration of how it might affect him or how he might be feeling after years of distance was selfish and shows a lack of awareness about the emotional complexity of the situation. She prioritized her own rules over the relationship, which led to her son feeling like he had no choice but to leave again.
