I never understood the need to follow someone. If they're regulars, you'll see their posts anyway. Whatever they have to post can't be terribly important to you anyway, unless you specifically get tagged.
It gives me an alert and the addition to the follower count is just as enjoyable as the addition to my post count is, if not more because of its scarcity.
