Ya the Russians seem to have gotten a lot smarter with tactics. Plus their plan when you think about it they basically had no choice to drive psychotically as deep as they could to their positions, like in range of Kiev and other cities. So that they could tie down the Ukrainian army.. so the whole Ukrainian army couldn't go down to the southeast NovoRussia provinces.

And in those provinces Russia also had to drive in very aggressively. Which then long supply lines, and the driving in, the Ukrainians were able to hit them with the western technology that is portable.

Being so spread out it also meant when they were driving supplies to say their units firing on Kiev they were exposed to the Ukrainians with the Javelins. Of course Russians could then try to sweep around the roads, and go after the Ukrainian units.. but then that is brutal fighting and losses on both sides.

Now that Russia has set up defenses and is doing fairly well in NovoRussia and while the Russian army is badly damaged, so too must be the Ukrainian army. The Russians can pull out of attacking the hardest places to get supplies too, like the Kiev units which is the most exposed.
