In Space Rangers II, when you died in space or during a quest, you would shown the leaderboard where among the pre-set entries with the description going like this:

"Ranger Kamikaze
Blaser now serves the Coalition
Keller has left to Klisans
Terron has been destroyed in a surface battle"

one could find himself at the bottom:

"Ranger Patzaksha
DID NOT LIVE TO SEE THE VICTORY

Blaser lives and fights the Coalition
Keller explores the galaxy
Terron still reproduces"

By which the player was always reminded that the intelligent races of the Coalition would still prevail, someday. Just without him. For whatever reason this thread reminded me of that leaderboard, in a way.
