I'd argue that personality does play a role, however your looks are a multiplier/ divider of your personality.
If you have a great personality but ugly, you're boring and uninteresting
If you have a boring personality but handsome, you're exciting and endearing.

Not to mention that if you're ugly, noone will even give your personality a chance.
