One day in my high school psychology class we were watching an episode of the show “Hoarders” (which is somewhere between reality TV and a genuine mental illness documentary)
This specific episode was about an elderly woman whose home, family and living conditions were completely devastated and dysfunctional as a result of her hoarding disorder
The significant part of this to me was just how the entire class would erupt into laughter over this at seemingly random and arbitrary moments; after a while you could immediately identify exactly what stimuli the algorithm recognized that triggered it. Inputs like “sudden noises”, “weird phrasing” would immediately output laughter from the entire room irrespective of the context
For example; this old woman literally had not had a functional kitchen, shower or bathroom in years because it was all turned into cluttered storage space. in one scene the psychiatrist asks her how she uses the bathroom, and she gives an awkward reply like “you just use water and… it’s like you’re homeless”; the camera angle then briefly pans over to show his disturbed expression
If your brain has the “contextualize information” function then you would have a fairly somber reaction to this, maybe not a dramatic outpour of empathy but at least a basic “wow this is unsanitary and this person is not okay”. but the algorithm that controls these people just recognized “weird sentence” and “dramatic camera angle” and immediately outputted uproarious laughter by default. their brain functions like the auto filter on Club Penguin that immediately bans you for saying “jews” regardless of the context
This happened countless times, consistently, always in the exact same way regardless of what was actually happening in the situation (even when it was deep into “mental illness documentary” territory and nothing about it was meant to be funny). “NPC” is frequently used just to describe anyone who likes mainstream stuff or has SJW political views but this was genuinely NPC behavior, there is no better way to describe it. these people are completely incapable of processing or interpreting information outside of basic input/output commands or responding to certain stimuli
It’s a big problem that everyone is raised in this same crude environment now. people that could’ve been intelligent are made to conform down to the same thoughtless automaton level. I imagine that most of the people in that room were just laughing because everyone else was and it never even occurred to them that they were dehumanizing a mentally ill person
