There seems to be people who can only enjoy a piece of fiction if there's a character who's both relatable and gets a happy ending.

Then there's people who like characters that are admirable as a sort of wish-fulfillment. Personally I'm in the latter. That's why I like Lelouch for example. He's popular, good looking, and high IQ, the very antithesis of what I am. I'm not some "he's literally me" autist, I know I'm nothing like him, but I still like to vicariously live though characters like him in fiction.

I don't want to play a game or watch an anime where the main character is like me, an ugly ogre with a low IQ. THAT would be suicide fuel. And if the plot gave such a character a love interest who likes him back, or anything even remotely resembling a good life, I wouldn't be able to suspend disbelief.

For that reason I don't like all these anime where the guy is an ordinary looking nerd with women who throw themselves at him. The pandering is too overt.
