Males are the exploiters, we produce a huge number of small reproductive cells at little cost. Females are the exploited, they invest a larger amount of resources in producing a tiny amount of reproductive cells, and a whole lot more during pregnancy. A male can leave his partner at any time, and we too see this in modern humans, fathers are the most likely to leave their wife and child alone. Is there anything a female can do to reduce the extent of male exploitation? She can reject.
The cost that we, the exploiters, pay is the lower chance of winning a particular mate, and the ruthless competition we have with other males. A reproductive strategy females have developed as a result of this, is only choosing to ally her genes with the best possible genes she can find in other males, to increase the possibility of her own genes survival. A few number of males are then allowed to slip through the gap, this is a source of most males annoyance, witnessing a small number of males get to use the most effective reproductive strategy, and exploit females.
The technology that modern society has brought us, no longer needing to worry about food, nor money via the welfare state, increases in medical technology etc, mean women no longer incur nearly as much risk as they used to. And the balance is thrown off, females get to keep their selective choice, but have no large risk to justify it's use.
