One of the big ideas of fascism, is 'a place for everyone and everyone in their place.' In societies 80% of males are the worker guys and 20% are meant for all sorts of other roles.
Males in the 80% they don't want to be the worker guys. They want to be various jobs like researchers or managers that they don't have the intellectual capacity to do, but they like the prestige/status of. So normies prefer other systems besides meritocracies. Such as hereditary, or nepotism, or egalitarian where your abilities/talents don't determine your position in the society.
Eg.. recently normies were outraged when Asians could get into universities because they scored higher on the standardized testing than the normies. Even though the non-Asian normies got lower marks, they still believe they should get the prestigious slots in the universities.
Even though this normie belief is infuriating, it makes sense from their perspective. Why would they support a society where they are just normie worker guys.
