I re-watched 'The Master' (2012) recently (btw spoilers ahead, but the movie is worth watching regardless).
First time I saw it, I failed to understand all the dynamics in the movie, but of course Hoffman's character (he plays the role of a cult leader, most probably inspired by Ron Hubbard, the guy who invented Scientology) strikes the viewer as a very in control, top of the pyramid manipulator. He has a strong effect not only on the cult members, but also on Joaquin Phoenix's character, who is an impulse driven guy and who plays the role of a 'slave' who eventually breaks free from the cult leader's spell.
But when I saw the movie again, I actually realized that 'the master' is actually the cult leader's wife. At first coming across as sort of mediocre/uninteresting, she completely dominates him in a short scene, where she gives him orders on how to behave and what to do, while she gives him a very cold hearted hand-job.
I've seen this pattern of the strong man dominated by a woman in other movies as well. Does having a lot of power get compensated by the need to be controlled in return? Is the myth of the dominant alpha man exaggerated?
I also start to think that the females control the game even harder than I assumed at first. Even an environment that might seem professional or money driven can actually be strongly influenced behind the scenes by a completely uninteresting foid who has some important man under her spell and dominance. He might play big money games or lead a company, but the color of her nail polish might ripple like the butterfly effect. After all, he subconsciously works for her (sort of).
Have you guys observed this pattern as well?
This makes want to monkmaxx even harder.
