Yup, my great-great-uncle was a WWII veteran who (probably) had PTSD, but that wasn't a thing back in the late 1950's, so his side of the family put him in a mental hospital with the same mindset: "This will be the best thing to happen to you, you'll be all better once you come out."

Electroshock therapy ruined his life and he got worse, not better. Stayed institutionalized for most of his life before going to hospice and dying in the late 1980's. I wonder if my family would still agree that putting him away was "the best thing" to happen to him?

Incel is a symptom. It isn't the illness itself. Many incels have depression, anxiety, OCD, narcissism, or possibly psychopathy from years of isolation and possibly abuse from other people. Being incel could be a product of a mental illness, could be something that leads to mental illness, and could even just be a way of life as a result of not focusing on trying to find a mate. There are a lot of currycels, for example, that were good little schoolkids and focused on careers, and just never played the dating game.
