Very true. It was quite hard to make real friends on my short trip in Vietnam as everyone was thinking of (your) money. There was also a work culture amongst locals and foreigners that was closer to that of their northern neighbors. Some expats were desperate to keep their workers' visas, and others were straight up broke. Like the locals, they were in need of regular customers to sell products and courses to. It was quite disappointing to see the number of foreigners spending hours in coffee shops on their laptops, as if they really had to work 8hrs/day in a 3rd world country, as if there wasn't the best beach in the country a block over.

You could do remote work - even American minimum wage can provide for a luxurious lifestyle. Otherwise a TEFL certification paired with white skin gives access to teaching work, especially in smaller cities
