I'm currently reading the memoirs of a Jewish black market trafficker during WW2... He says that back in his day, if you were handsome or pretty enough you didn't even need to work to make a living. It was extremely easy to coast by on your looks by marrying a rich man, of if you were male, entertaining old widows / prostituting yourself. Prostitution was an institution.... "Keeping" a mistress or a lover was extremely common.

This fills a pattern of blackpilled books pre 1950.
