I'm sure the image we see of ourselves in the mirror is distorted somehow, which leads us to end up looking better than we do in pictures. Maybe it has something to do with depth, lighting, or wide angles. I'm not sure, but definitely it seems like the angle you take while still being able to see your face seems quite miniscle.

With our voices, it's easier to notice this similar effect because the acoustical environment that experience as we talk out loud, isn't the same as the environment that a person hearing us speak is in. So that's why I think we are dealing with some sort of distortion which affects the way we perceive how we look in different scenarios.

If all of this is true, I'm not sure how your plan will work utilizing this effect. You could always try to touch up your pictures via photoshop.

There is no way to exactly know how others percieve you. Closest you'll get to that is to watch how others react to you and make your conclusion. If you look in the mirror or at photos of yourselves your opinion of yourself will always have some influence on the way you see yourself.
