Imagine that other people are mirrors and how they respond to you, positively or negatively, constitutes the quality of your reflection. If they respond to you positively, through them you can self-admire. If they respond to you negatively, through them you can self-hate.
When an incel who has been rejected and chastized (explicitly and implicitly) goes on a shooting rampage, even without the inevitable suicide and incarceration, it is essentially an act of self-destruction inasmuch as he's destroying reflections of himself by destroying other people. It is synonymous with smashing mirrors which show a reflection that displease him for revenge and so self-consciousness can be soothed.
As Saint Elliot wrote: "...all because the females of the human species were incapable of seeing the value in me."
