I think there are some big gaps between "there are and have been many religions on earth" and "this is part of our evolution and serves our survival/genetic fitness."
Religions, to me, are simply the resultant artifacts of human ignorance that have taken shape and formed into a cohesive, organized structure for both individuals and large groups. They do serve a useful purpose, as they lay a foundation and prescription for orderly and civil behavior amongst in-groups in the form of God-given morals and instructions. This inherently runs counter to the MO of "survival of the fittest," since religion is cooperative by design, not competitive.
That might be a naive summary interpretation of religion as a whole and there's probably a whole lot more below the surface that I'm ignoring. But that's a topic for another time.
