I saw them shortly before the battle, these young tank grenadiers made a great image.
In their short, black with silver decorated uniforms.
They were standing in their tank formation, and knew they were driving towards death.
Many of them were proudly wearing the neck band with big, black silver knights cross, shiny targets for their enemy.
None of these excellent fighters seemed bothered or even moved.
They rolled on, through the snow and through the guns of the retreating army.
No one came back - not one tank - not one man.
Orders were orders.
To win one hour, this hour, which possibly could save the lives of ten thousand soldiers of the Reich and Europe.
The German tank soldiers died until the last man, south of Chanerovka, in the morning of February 17, 1944
