Hollywood has been telling "the beta wins over the Chad alpha" stories since the 80s at least.

Lots of romantic comedies are about the plucky beta who works his ass off to impress a woman and swoons her over the cockier Chad, usually because it comes out the "Chad never really cared about her" and the woman falls for the beta instead.

I think it's likely a marketing gimmick in the case of romcoms. They can bring women into the seats just by making it romantic in subject matter. But the boyfriends will all leave the theater or refuse to go if it just features alphas pounding average girls 24/7. That's essentially what 50 Shades of Grey was, and that's why women went crazy over it. No beta appeasement. Pure Alpha Fucks.
