So Max Schmeling became heavyweight champion of the world in 1931 after his fight with then world heavyweight champion Jack Sharkey. He was a very good boxer, a type of cerebral boxer, a good counter puncher and had a hard hitting right hand. In 1936, he was slated to fight the young rising star of the heavyweight division, Joe Louis. Now Joe Louis was a black fighter, his grandparents had been slaves who were freed after the Civil War. At this time, Joe Louis was beginning to gain a reputation as being unbeatable. Since he had turned pro in 1934, he had already defeated by KO 2 former world HW champions, one of whom, Max Baer (a Jew no less) had beaten Max Schmeling by TKO in 1933. Joe Louis had KO'd Max Baer in 4 rounds in 1935.
Now Schmeling was a German citizen and Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany at the time, did not want Max Schmeling to fight Joe Louis because Hitler nor his officials, thought that Max Schmeling could beat Joe Louis. And they thought it would look very bad to their doctrine of Aryan Superiority if he lost in front of the world to a black man. But Max Schmeling had decided to go through with the fight anyway. While training for the fight, he watched lots of film of Joe Louis fighting. And he noticed that everytime Louis threw a jab, he brought it back low, making it easy for him to be countered with a right hand. Max Schmeling knew that was his key to victory.
So Hitler had the fight blacked out in Germany because he didn't want the German people to see or hear of Max Schmeling losing to a black fighter, which everyone just knew would happen. Joe Louis was the overwhelming favorite of the odds makers.So fight night came and everyone thought that Max Schmeling was a lamb being led to the slaughter.
But Schmeling shocked the world and caused a huge upset (boxing wouldn't see an upset like that again until 1990 when Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson). His plan to counter Louis with right crosses had worked. In the 12th round, he put Joe Louis down for a 10 count. When Joe Louis was counted out, Hitler and his officials were listening to the fight on the radio and one of them said "I cannot believe it. Schmeling has beaten the negro"
