Later, he would stand and haltingly read his perfunctory letter of apology, insisting in a monotone that he has changed, that he no longer hates women, that he regrets ripping a mother from her child. But how hollow those words will sound in comparison to the grief that still echoes in this court. O.S. was 17, a friendless, high school dropout living in his divorced father’s basement consuming the dark online world of incel misogyny where losers blame women for all their problems and where he described himself as a “proud incel,” “seeker of martyrdom” and a hater of “feminists/atheists/satanists and all kinds of other degenerates.“ opening envelope Your Midday Sun Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. Article content Calling his client “tragic and pathetic,” his lawyer offered a heartfelt apology to O.S.’s victims and acknowledged his “uphill battle” convincing the judge to impose a youth sentence — a maximum 10 years with only six in custody — after his client refused a plan to take specialized rehabilitation programming because he’s afraid for his safety. O.S. then stood and apologized to Arzaga’s family and the manager he injured. “And to the little girl, I am sorry for taking your mother away and destroying the rest of your childhood. I hope you accept my apology but at the same time, I understand if you don’t.” Akhtar will deliver his sentence Nov. 28. [email protected]
