Losing access to old games is part of what can make gaming feel worse over time

For example... if I want to play '90s games now I need either the original hardware (which is failing now as it's so old, plus the games are expensive and in short supply) or an emulator, and emulators are often not especially good, depending on the console.

Do you see what I mean? Sometimes new technical challenges are presented that in fact didn't exist back in the day, and that in itself can make gaming feel worse, depending on what games you want to play.

Good point. In time hopefully emulators will get better.

Some games with active fanbases have added fan patches for them to work on modern software but you might as well call them emulators anyway.

Like JJ2 :feelsautistic:

Nope. Don't like that. Brutal.

People say it's like Sonic.

I saw a gameplay of it too.

Is it really that good? I'm curious.

Erm... I mean it's largely just in my title because I think it's funny but... yeah it's pretty good. Quite unique. I did used to really enjoy playing the original Jazz Jackrabbit when I was a kid and it has a pretty fun style. It's a bit like run 'n' gun Sonic!

Not a problem for native pc games* :bigbrain:

*there are some exceptions especially for MSDOS games

I mean yeah, I was able to play touhou from ESOD and above since it was made for windows.

loved that game when i was a kid, autists are fixing old games on pc

shame that you can't really do much with old console games except to change resoultion and install some texture mods, there are very very few mods for old ps2 games like Gran Turismo 4 but that's about it

A lot of older PC games are not compatible with modern graphics cards or current versions of Windows. As a case in point, you needed to pirate games like Freelancer to install them because safedisc DRM on the original Freelancer CDs was incompatible with Windows 10, as was C&C Red Alert 2 until it was re-released by EA Games, digitally.

Yeah it can be tricky. Rereleases are the usual fix.

It does depend heavily on the game and many you can get to work if you put a bit of time in.

That in itself can be a downside though as for consoles in particular the simplicity of it is really nice.

safedisc was always crap (just like securom/starforce) so you always need to bypass those DRMs while Red Alert 2 works fine without any re-releases:
