I first noticed this phenomenon in this Politico article:

Where, when talking about the possible reasons why the Vietnamese like Trump so much, it is suggested that his image as a successful businessman could be the reason, because: "almost 20 percent of the adult population in Vietnam owns their own business, the third-highest rate of 60 countries surveyed by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor."

This was pretty surprising, so I looked right at the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor itself. Obviously, not the same that they are talking about, since the article's from 2017 and I looked at the latest one, but it's true, and explicitly discussed in the report itself.

They openly admit in the report itself that only is there a negative correlation between the rate of business ownership and GDP per capita, they even tried comparing the business ownership rate to HDI in hopes of finding some indicator with less of a negative relationship with it:feelskek::feelskek:.

Unfortunately, Vietnam isn't in this report, but it is here:

Where the GEM report for 2014 is summarized on an interactive map, with a 22.15% business ownership rate for Vietnam. Given that the 2017 one was pretty much the same, I'd guess that it probably still hasn't changed much, which is probably the case since the 2014 one has Thailand above it with 33.06% rate. In the 2011 report, Thailand was also high above the other countries with around 30% ownership rate, so those numbers definitely seem not to change much over time.

Early stage vs established business ownership rates by country 2011

Plus, in case anyone wants some more concrete numbers, Statista has this graph for 2022 Europe at least:

Where you can definitely see a slight clustering of poorer countries at the top with the richer ones under them, though, there are some who are both rich and high in this chart (moggers tbh:feelswhat:) and some who are both poor and not running businesses (over:dafuckfeels:.)

I live in America and I could never even dream of owning my own business:feelsugh:.

lifefuel tbh:feelsjuice:
the only problem is that only middle class and rich people have this, not low life scums are capable of owning a respectable business

A lot of these countries have lower regulations so that's probably why.
