if the player is smart enough and able to anticipate how the pieces will be moved, he can determine the outcome of the game after a few moves.
only a stupid player aknowledges his defeat at the end of the match and keeps playing hoping in a casual error of his opponent.
ending the game is the most rational thing to do and yet the world is full of people who already lost but are still playing, this really highlights how the supposed rationality of
human beings is nothing more than a myth.
i also like how chess can simbolize the duality of life(white pieces) and death(black pieces) like what bergman did in the seventh seal.
