The pretty Becku was too active to get a good discrete stare at... So I mostly ignored her as I got the stuff on my list.

At the checkout she was all cheerful and saw I had 5 bags (10#'s) of brown sugar. She said,

"That's a lot of brown sugar! What are you going to do with it?"

I croaked out... "Cookies."

It's my standard reply when buying booze making stuff. I sure wasn't going to tell her....

"I'm going to turn that $10 of brown sugar bought with food stamps, into a gallon of rum."

I figured I'd go ahead and get the sugar while they had it. Even though it wasn't on my shopping list. Since. It was a buck a pound!

During the cold weather it takes about a month to fermentation? Then add a day per pint of 160 proof. It's not an instant thing.

Basically, it makes five gallons of sugar "wine" that's about 20proof. Then you have to run it through a still to get the water out and bump up the proof.

About 1/5 of that five gallons of "wine" is pure alcohol...

My recipe is 2 pounds of brown sugar and 4 pouch's of yeast with five gallons of water. I if you put too much sugar in it tasts like crap

I drink it hot as it cones out of the still. I only save it when too drunk to want more.

But I'll be giving pints away for Christmas this year

I see, so 2lbs sugar = 1 gallon final product.

Also, if the wine is 20 proof, then it only has 10% abv, not 1/5, right?

10% would make more sense because the final product would be 50% abv or 100 proof, which is pretty high.

Yeah. Actually ~20% abv or 10 proof.

Each pint of raw wine is the equivalent of two or three standard beers.
