I cant stop seeing similarities between western world in 2024 and USSR in firsr half of 80s.
When Brezhnev died in 1982, the Andropov came in powee and he basically tried to make USSR totalitarian again. USSR was actually quite free during 60-70s, but from 1982 to 1984(Andropov death), USSR actually tried to become oppressive again like it was during Stalin, but it failed.
It reminds me how western world tried to become very totalitarian during 2020-2022, but failed. And the reason for this is the same as in USSR - both Soviet citizens in the 80s and western citizens right now dont believe in the official narrative anymore. The majority of zoomers are already alt-right or far-right. The youth doesnr support western "values" just like in the 80s, Soviet youth didnt support Soviet values anymore.
What happens next? There was a try to go for totalitarism during COVID, but it failed. I think that just like in USSR, Perestroika(going from socialism to capitalism) started in 1986, in western world there will be something similar.
First they will cancel the laws that prohibit free speech(hate speech laws), but wont go away from liberalism so fast.
USSR was officially socialist till 1989, when they officially canceled socialism, so i think western world will probably allow free speech in around 2025, and will officially change its ideology in 2030.
