Isn’t it odd how folks who are big on bodily autonomy and consent seem to toss those values aside when it comes to psychiatry? They’re quick to call out any secrecy or abuse or control in places like the church, but when it’s about psychiatric practices, it's like they turn a blind eye. It's almost as if they’re cool with it just because it prevents self-harm. But isn’t that a bit hypocritical? It makes me wonder if their commitment to autonomy and consent is as solid as they claim. And get this - they seem okay with the idea of keeping people alive in these settings just to ease their own moral discomfort. Yet, aren’t these the same folks who accuse pro-lifers of 'forcing life' for the sake of control? It’s a bit of a head-scratcher.

"Tolerance"....but only for certain people

They're a bunch of hypocrites and they know it, but expect YOU to believe their claims to the contrary and attempts to explain away their double standards. Everything they claim to fight for isn't applied across the board, but only applied to certain people, and they know damn well they're doing this. The worst sexists are feminists, the worst racists are "anti-racists", the worst homophobes are gay activists, and the list goes on. The Left only cares about power, not morality.

Psychiatry is needed because some people are bat-shit insane. Then there are the people who are completely normal but have money to experiment with psych drugs, specifically anti-anxiety pills and now hallucinatory meds like ketamine.

But psychiatry is still needed for the batshit crazy people. When I did a rotation in psychiatry in medical school, all of the inpatients either (1) wanted to be there, e.g. suicidal and wanted help or (2) legit dangers to themselves or others. For example, one adult would repeatedly would cut his abdomen and stuff random things inside (imagine the medical cost accrued by that guy), another adult kept accusing people of raping him - we took his blood to do a drug test and he accused the nurse of using his blood to "make babies", one adolescent force-fed his younger brother THC-laced edibles and burned down his grandma's house, etc. The fuck are you going to do with these people? Some of them are lucky they're in a comfortable psych hospital and not in prison.

The paranoia of "sectioning" people is mostly unfounded from what I saw. I know abuses do happen, but it's far from the norm. IMO, one of the reasons the 1950s was such a peaceful time to walk down the street is because all the crazy people were permanently institutionalized. Now that's no longer possible, but we need to hold these people and put them on antipsychotics or at least sedatives for awhile before letting them back out in the world. (Also some 2nd generation antipsychotics really are wonder drugs for the right type of patient- people go from auditory hallucinations of persecution to being mostly normal and holding down normal jobs. One guy did nothing in almost ten years and once on meds was able to finish a 4-year accounting degree in 2.5 years and get a good job. Would you rather that guy smelling like decaying shit and mumbling garbage at you?)
