Just got done watching Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line". Its excellent of course but what is ridiculously apparent is hierarchy is based on looks. I'm sure it isn't exactly like this in real life but I could also wager to guess that movies influence promotions in the real army. Truly ridiculous as George Clooney is given a very small role at the end as an officer but the whole movie was jawlines vs. recessed lower thirds in my opinion. Not to mention all the enemy gooks were jawlineless.
Also watch all of Malick's movies. Badlands is a good start.
BTW: Happy Thanksgiving.
