He had gone in Thailand looking for adventures. In the Southeast Asian country he had had several sexual relations. And in the end he returned to Treviso with an infection disseminated with gonococcus, a very rare form of the disease that is transmitted through unprotected relationships and that affects the blood, causes skin lesions and damages the joints. This is what happened to a 45-year-old Italian, who immediately returned to the Marca and immediately turned to Ca ‘Foncello. Here he was followed by the Infectious Diseases Unit, headed by Pier Giorgio Scotton.
THE DIAGNOSIS
“We have identified the germ through a withdrawal of liquid from the knee and then started the treatment with an association of antibiotics, to prevent the appearance of resistance, the primary point is the gonococcus can give localizations even at a distance, that is in other parts of the body , spreading precisely in the blood and joints ».
“The biggest problem is that the germ is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, Scotton warns, consequently also antibiotic treatment becomes increasingly difficult and complex.”
Every year, a hundred people turn to the Treviso hospital for sexually transmitted diseases, including syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, Mycoplasma genitalium and so on. The average is two cases per week. And there are serious complications related always to the gonococcus. In 2019, in particular, Ca ‘Foncello addressed the cases of three young women who risked not being able to have children for an untreated genital infection that had even come to cause peritonitis.
“They have undergone surgery for a pelvic peritonitis that had started precisely from gonococcus confirms the specialist in addition to infections, the gonococcus can develop complications that give sterility and, more rarely, localizations in other parts of the body”.
