Let me make a comparison:

People have negative general beliefs about certain groups of people, which works as a self-fulfilling prophecy to put those groups down even more. Well, it turns out that most stereotypes are actually accurate and non-causative. Even when the stereotype doesn’t apply to a particular individual, people are quick to take that info into account and stop iudging that person based on a generalization. We’re not dumb after all!

Something similar must be going on with shy and depressed people. The common assumption is that they have false beliefs that work as self-fulfilling prophecies. You believe something bad is going to happen if you start talking with that girl, so you don’t. “Just talk to her, bro!” Nope, that belief is probably accurate. People do exaggerate sometimes, but not as frequently as commonly tought.

Does that mean that it’s ogre if you’re shy or depressed? No. But it’s probably much better to change your situation than to just change your beliefs.
