Feb. 13, 2012 Two students at Winchester High School were concerned with Yao’s Facebook posts. Yao had posted video of a manifesto linked to the Virginia Tech mass-shooter and another video of a shooting demonstration. Police described Yao’s “noticeable decline in personal hygiene.” A police officer noted “we needed documentation from a psychiatrist indicating Yao was psychologically fit to be in school.” Yao saw a child psychiatrist, who appeared to clear him to return to school, according to the police report.
- In 2012, Yao's school resource officer was notified about material posted on social media and police said they received written confirmation that he was being treated by a mental health professional.
- Nov. 13, 2013, after investigating a case where Yao was accused of following a 5th grade girl, police escorted him to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
- Oct. 7, 2016, Yao was found by an officer at the library after a healthcare worker reported he had made suicidal statements.
- June 28, 2017, police said that Yao asked a customer at a convenience store to kill him and Yao was taken for another mental health evaluation.
- Sept. 9, 2017, Yao was arrested for allegedly breaking into a neighbor's home. Police said they escorted Yao to the hospital where he was supposed to undergo a mental health evaluation.
