Japanese, and I'm guessing this is even more so for the rural ones, are very collectivist and once you do anything out of the norm, you are automatically considered an outcast.
Something like this happened in the 90s as well, after a guy named Tsutomu Miyazaki killed a bunch of little girls and it was later revealed that he liked collecting anime and media in general, everyone who was deemed an otaku was now considered a threat of some sorts. That's what kind of started the whole stereotype in Japan that otakus are all mentally deranged outcasts.

Why would you kill your own son over reading a news article? You can tell his dad chose the state over his own son from an early age. That is probably why his son went hiki in the first place. Weak father presence and absent mother. If he was a minister then he was probably traveling a lot. The way he killed him was wrong too, being stabbed to death. Was he ashamed of him to kill him in such a painful way?
