South Korea vs. North Korea indeed is telling. The gap is simply horrific by now aand growing.
Then there was Taiwan in 1970s vs PRC. Taiwan was still poor, it was authoritarian, too, and still outperformed the Communist China.

The most developed communist country ever: East Germany also lagged behind West Germany by all metrics. Despite the fact that in 1945 their GDP per capita were the same.

An Old Left commie I mentioned East Germany and the Berlin Wall to (which was erected to prevent people from fleeing to West Berlin/ultimately West Germany) argued this was a case of "brain drain". One wonders why more talented people would flee (illegally, according to the East German laws) from a superior system to the inferior system, which would have been his interpretation of the systems and their value.

Arguing with Old Left commies is a waste of time. This trend has near zero political relevance in the modern West.
This however doesn't mean I'd buy into the tax-cut GOP nonsense that any welfare redistribution would lead to communism or just a deterioration of the standards of living. This is empirically not true, let's say, an average Finn enjoys a much higher standard of living than an average American, despite the fact that the US has a much higher GDP per capita.
