If I remember correctly, the Shy Guy appeared in SMB2, which is widely considered the anomaly of the series - because it was based on a game called Doki Doki Panic, hence the major changes from the original SMB.

Pretty sure Shy Guy only appears on Mario Kart DS last time I've checked and thats when you connect your DS with another player's DS. I usually picked Toad, King Boo and Luigi. The games I own are Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart DS so thats saying something. The last time I've played either was about a couple of years ago but I'm still pretty good at Mario Kart Wii because I usually get first place whenever I play with someone. My skills in the game even attributed to a gaming club that I went to a couple of years ago that was associated with my school and I remember getting first place on the Wii U version.
