Ultimately Christians love the neighbor because we want his soul to be saved. We don't necessarily desire lesser goods for them, like LIFE itself (this is why the death penalty is allowed). And the forgiveness of sins does not free you from earthly punishments and even from all punishments after death (Catholics believe in Purgatory).
