NaNo2 is an often (at least back in the day) recommended way to rope painlessly to the point where its more of a meme than anything. The way it works is that it blocks the oxygen transport in your blood stream, if you take it in high doses. And honestly, that doesnt sound like a painless way to go at all.

Upon ingesting SN which is very salty btw, you will become nauseous, your heart will race fast, and your breathing will get heavier all in an attempt by your body to get oxygen which the SN is preventing from being consumed by your body by blinding with the hemoglobin in your blood. You might puke due to nausea, but eventually you will get drowsy and lose consciousness for good.

No, helium. I don't know what sodium nitrate is but it doesn't sound fun. I used helium, it wasn't just totally painless but it was also very peaceful. I wish I could have that feeling again.
