If the religions in question hold the act as a sin, then it is evil, since sin is, by definition, acts of defiance and transgression against God's law or commands. All evil isn't the same, however, and there are degrees to it.
As to the question of whether or not it's moral, you'd have to decouple the question from religion and investigate it's moral worth or value from the outside, because religion simplifies the morality of things to whether or not it's forbidden. From religion's point of view, all things that are allowed are degrees of moral and all things that aren't are degrees of immoral.
Holding the beliefs of any ideology (religious or political) is not necessarily being brainwashed. People throw around this term carelessly, but it means something specific: to actively manipulate people into changing their beliefs for your malicious and insidious purposes (control and utility i.e., using people for your ends).
