It's cuck to die for the principal, but not to kill for them when being attacked. You're supposed to shield them AND fight back. Depending on the protection detail, the threat level, and the importance of the principal, it might be the job of one dedicated guy to cover the VIP and be the meat shield, while the others fight back. Despite the nature of the job, it's statistically very safe to be a bodyguard. Most of the time your mere presence is a deterrent.

A skilled assassin will bypass the bodyguards anyway, so dangers to the bodyguards become a non-issue. The only time it really, REALLY sucks to be a bodyguard is if your principal is targeted by a bomb.
