In all my years of gymcelling I never worked out my neck and it looks pathetically thin compared to my body

Yes, but go very light and don't overdo it. Twice a week max. I shouldn't have to emphasize that your neck is a vulnerable area.

You won't get a thick yoke like those powerlifters (genetics), but your internal muscles will strengthen by a fair bit and you'll be more resistant to injury.
