When you look into the evolution of intelligence you may notice that the optimal level of intelligence needed to maximize the chances of passing on your genes is the average intelligence.

Too high and your mind is more concerned with bigger things than procreating. Too low and you can't survive (or thrive) properly in your environment to be in a position (economically and socially) to procreate. Average is that sweet spot.
