Maslow's hierarchy of needs posits that human beings have needs that must be fulfilled by themselves or others to survive. It starts with the most basic needs (food, water, sleep, etc.) and gets more abstract (safety)
But right above immediate physical safety is the need for belongingness and love, which are fulfilled by other people and not oneself. A person NEEDS friends and intimate relationships to be psychologically satisfied, according to mainstream psychology.
So how is it acceptable for a basic psychological need to go unmet for a person's entire life? Especially when it is not one's own fault that they cannot fulfill this need. In fact, I would consider that to be a crime against humanity on par with not providing food to a poor person. Society should help them with state mandated girlfriends.
