It's been overboard for years now. The UK has already crossed the Rubicon. There's no going back now on all of the things they've done. It's only going to get worse until total collapse when people are pushed to their absolute limits and armed soldiers are deployed on the streets. Some soldier is going to get stabbed, have their gear stolen, then you'll see an insurrection.

Maybe they're trying to scare people into submission.

That's precisely the idea. At some point, though, people are just going to stop giving a fuck and treat the lives they have in civil society as forfeit. Their home, jobs and status in society won't matter anymore, and they will simply fight back.
