The Perils of Not Being Attractive or Athletic: Pathways to Adolescent Adjustment Difficulties Through Escalating Unpopularity

Abstract:

The study investigates how low athleticism and low attractiveness contribute to adjustment difficulties in adolescents, focusing on the mediating roles of unpopularity and rejection. It involved middle school students (ages 10-13) from the USA and Lithuania, collecting data on alcohol misuse, loneliness, athleticism, attractiveness, unpopularity, and peer rejection over an academic year. The results indicated that possessing stigmatized traits (low athleticism, low attractiveness) predicted escalating unpopularity, which in turn predicted increasing adjustment difficulties like alcohol misuse and loneliness.

Introduction:

  • Attractive and athletic youth still hold dominant positions in adolescent peer groups, while those lacking these traits face challenges.
  • Low attractiveness and athleticism are linked to social anxiety, aggression, interpersonal problems, and diminished educational/occupational achievement.
  • The study explores how low attractiveness and athleticism lead to a loss of peer status, resulting in loneliness and alcohol misuse.
  • The study differentiates between unpopularity (low standing in the group hierarchy) and rejection (being disliked by peers) and examines their roles as potential mediators.
Hypotheses:

  • Low attractiveness and low athleticism lead to increased unpopularity, which in turn leads to increased loneliness and alcohol misuse.
  • Unpopularity is expected to be more strongly linked to attractiveness and athleticism than rejection.
  • The study also explores whether the risks associated with low attractiveness are greater for girls and whether those associated with low athleticism are specific to boys.
Method:

  • Participants: 238 students from a South Florida public school and 342 students from public middle schools in a Lithuanian city.
  • Procedure: Surveys were administered to students on computer tablets at three time points during a single academic year.
  • Measures:
    • Peer nominations for athletic, attractive, unpopular, and rejected.
    • A 4-item instrument measuring frequency of alcohol intoxication.
    • A 5-item instrument measuring loneliness.
  • Plan of Analysis: Bayesian structural equation modeling was used to examine direct and indirect effects.
Key Concepts:

  • Stigmatized traits: Low athleticism and low attractiveness, considered as deficits valued by peers.
  • Unpopularity: Behaviors signaling low standing in the group hierarchy, such as lack of prestige, submissiveness, and difficulty securing resources.
  • Rejection: The extent to which an individual is disliked by members of the peer group.
  • Adjustment difficulties: Manifested in loneliness and alcohol misuse.
  • Longitudinal mediation design: Used to test the hypothesis that youth who lack assets valued by peers lose social status across the school year, which in turn promotes adjustment difficulties.

Key findings:
  • Stigmatized Traits Predict Escalating Unpopularity: Possessing low athleticism and low attractiveness predicted increasing unpopularity among adolescents.
  • Unpopularity Predicts Adjustment Difficulties:Escalating unpopularity, in turn, predicted increases in alcohol misuse and loneliness.
