I picked up a Friday shift at the lunch facility at my college (yesterday/earlier today, depending on your perspective). And I served a group of differently abled people/people with special needs. The chaperone later told me everyone thought I was funny and entertaining as a host. Which makes sense, I was really gelling with those people. And I think I got a feel for what people mean when they say "differently abled." These people weren't "stupid." Just built for non-normie things. And maybe society has failed in not appreciating their gifts. We've decided we don't need them. But I think I do. They're my people. I belong with the retards.
It won't always be easy, there's a lot of food stuff to memorize. And again, different abilities. I think I'm handicapped as far as remembering what is and isn't vegan and intuitively knowing all of the ingredients in a jalapeño popper. At least one of my co-workers was fairly short with me about how slow I am to pick up on this stuff. Plastic choker, painted eyes, oversized hoodie, you know the type. So after a day of her impatience with my slowness, it was good to tend to the table of my people.
In a few hours I gotta wake up and head back for another shift. I don't suspect the special needs table will be back again. But where ever they are, I hope life is as good to them as they were to me.
