You build immunity to it, but mutated variants may make you sick. Every year when you get a cold and it runs its course you build an immunity to that strain of the virus, but since it rapidly mutates, you can easily catch another cold next season.

SARS-Cov-2 mutates slower than the common cold, but signs point towards a weakening Covid-19 virus, as subsequent iterations of mutations could weaken it further.
