They're supposed to be the origins of metal music but at this point I would consider them closer to blues rock than metal when you think of the average metal band.

Actual focus on Melody
Solos that are actually meaningful
Sound actually has variety and tone and isn't always that low growling sound
Chooses it own tempo rather than just being fast for the sake of it
Lyrics are on everyday working class things
Genuinely made by working class people from Birmingham
No obsession trying to be excessively brutal

And for those reasons Black Sabbath is probably greater than any metal band out there.
